The way most customers link to you on the Internet is by using search engines. There are many different types, and each have their own criteria for accepting and ranking sites based upon what the user is searching for.
Website promotion - Pay for Placement
Some search engines will not only allow companies, but will require companies to pay money to both be listed on the search engine, and then get a high ranking given a special search key word.
This can have benefit of getting assurance that you will be placed on the search engine quickly, and be ranked according to what you pay. Content is a highly overlooked way to get your ranking to be much higher. The basic theory is that engines will rank your site higher if the content on your page closely resembles your description and keywords.
Hyperlinks from other sites can also increase your ranking with some search engines. Although it can be effective, sometimes if you partner with too many other wesites in order to get links to yours, you end up losing some of the design appeal. It can be used to your advantage, if you are able to strike partnerships with a site that would enhance the visit for the user, like if you were a Realtor, and had a link to the local bank, and they in turn had a link to your site from theirs.

Bots are amazing little programs that crawl around the Internet websites from link to link, compiling information on the meta tags, content, and hyperlinks. If can get the right bot to visit your page, it can sometimes be enough to catapult your site into high rankings.
